Institution Panel
Around 1968: Activism – Trajectories – Institutions

Friday, 23 November 2018, 7:30 pm

The period around 1967/68 marks not only the relative zero point of the so-called “long march through the institutions” – to work against established institutions by working within them – but also the moment in which many of these institutions were founded. These include the Institute for Principles of Modern Architecture (IGmA), the Institute for History and Theory of Architecture (gta) at ETH Zurich, and Peter Eisenman and Emilio Ambasz’s Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies (IAUS) in New York City, to name just a few. A number of significant architecture journals were also founded around this time, among the most notable being ARCH+. This panel addresses the role of institutions in architectural discourse since the period of 1968, their contribution to architecture’s potential for surprise – and raises urgent questions as to how they will shape architecture in the future.

With Assemble (tbc), Inés de Castro, Eva Franch i Gilabert (tbc), Sokratis Georgiadis, Fabienne Hoelzel, Wilfried Kuehn (Kuehn Malvezzi), Anne Lacaton (Lacaton & Vassal, tbc), Werner Sobek, Martha Thorne (tbc), and Philip Ursprung, moderated by Stephan Trüby.

Generation Panel
Around 2018: Activism – Trajectories – Institutions

Saturday, 24 November 2018, 7 pm

2018 not only marks the 50th anniversary of IGmA but also the events of 1968, which can be seen as the relative zero point of contemporary architectural theory. One could argue that the institute’s celebration could not take place during more inhospitable times: the current antiliberalrollback contradicts the emancipatory achievements of 1968, and is channeled by a new right-wing movement (both extra-parliamentary and parliamentary) aiming to turn back the clock on the Western world: back to a time of clearly contoured nation-states with their corresponding inhabitants, back to a “Europe of Fatherlands,” and back to a United States of America longing for “greatness.” Against this backdrop, this panel examines the political projects of various generations and peer groups – and in light of current political challenges explores the limits and opportunities of a primarily political, technically or formally understood architecture.

With Momoyo Kaijima (Atelier Bow-Wow), Achim Menges, Johanna Meyer-Grohbrügge (June14), Marianne Mueller (Casper Mueller Kneer), Oda Pälmke, Bernard Tschumi, Tobias Hoenig (c/o now, IGmA), and Jürgen Mayer H. (tbc), moderated by Stephan Trüby.
