Eine große Ausstellung im Schunck*-Glaspaleis in Heerlen (NL) thematisiert ab April 2016 den denkmalpflegerischen Umgang mit dem baulichen Erbe des in Aachen geborenen, weltberühmten Architekten Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Katalog zur Ausstellung mit Texten u.a. von Ivo Hammer, Dietrich Neumann und Gerda Breuer.
Die RWTH ist mit dem Lehrstuhl Baukonstruktion und dem Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet Denkmalpflege und Historische Bauforschung maßgeblich beteiligt. Es werden dort Ergebnisse der gemeinsamen Forschungsarbeit ausgestellt, die in den letzten zwei Jahren mit Hilfe von Studierenden der Fakultät für Architektur zusammengetragen wurden. Dazu zählen neben Aufmaßzeichnungen auch Seminararbeiten, Modelle, originales Baumaterial und historische Dokumente.

Bauhaus, Barcelona Chair, Less is more. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (Aachen 1886 - Chicago 1969) helped redefine the skylines of Berlin, Chicago and New York with groundbreaking architecture, as well as numerous iconic items of furniture. His principles: open plans, fluid spaces and cantilevered support structures. His objects he created out of an artisanal love for materials (in particular, steel and stone).
‘Mies’ still enjoys currency today. His rational and universal ideas continue to inspire the architects of the present. His buildings however, are falling into a state of disrepair or are in need of redevelopment. The preservation and redevelopment of this heritage - within the right context and in the right fashion - is crucial for urban regions. Urban developers everywhere are asking themselves: what should be preserved, how and why?
Mies was a major source of inspiration in the urban development of Heerlen. Architecturally speaking, during the first half of the 20th century, the young town could count itself amongst the avant-garde. Even today, over 100 buildings from this period help define the identity of Heerlen and its surroundings.
‘MIES & the inheritance of modernism’ attempts to lay bare these treasures. If the city is able to understand exactly how pioneering these buildings were, it will be able to reflect more intensely on their function, their preservation value and the way in which their demise may be halted. Mies van der Rohe came from Aachen, a city less than 20 km from Heerlen. Later on this year, the Ludwig Forum in Aachen will be putting on its own ‘sister’ exhibition about Mies’ MoMA collages.
Why in SCHUNCK* Glaspaleis
On two occasions in the past, the edifice designed by Frits Peutz for Peter Schunck in 1933 was threatened with demolition. Now it is a paragon of successful renovation (by Jo Coenen and Wiel Arets) and redevelopment (cultural centre with library, school of music, modern art, architecture, arthouse cinema, café and brasserie). In 2016, the building was branded in the same breath as other masterworks from the Nieuwe Bouwen period, such as the Rietveld house, the Zonnestraal sanatorium and the Van Nelle factory. The Glaspaleis is listed as being one of the 1,000 most important buildings of the 20th century.

During the exhibition, several trips will be organized, including a tour through the Verseidag complex on Sunday, June 19 and a two-day program including a tour of the HausTugendhat.

In collaboration with Filmhuis De Spiegel, several films are screened in line with the theme.
