MASS Design Group Partners in Health: Klinikbauten in Ruanda / Medical Clinic in Rwanda

Von MASS Design Group /  Sturm, Philipp

Until 2010, the Rwandan district of Burera had one doctor for every 350,000 residents and no hospitals. Through both individual commitments and the joint efforts of foundations, international aid organizations, and the rwandan government, the Butaro Hospital now stands on a green hill in the stunning Virunga Mountain range. Paul Farmer, an American doctor and a co-founder of the organization partners in Health (PIH), met the architecture student Michael Murphy at Harvard in 2007. Soon thereafter, Farmer commissioned the young student to design and build the hospital in Rwanda. Murphy accepted the challenge and founded MASS Design Group in Boston with his fellow student Alan Ricks.
