Von Opel, Nicole /  Reese, Achim

Modernist concepts dictated the reconstruction of cities after 1945, marking architecture’s increasing remove from the realities of society. The dogmatic functionalism of the construction industry clashed with the growing complexity of the emerging post-Fordist era. Parallel to the tabula rasa planning of “urban renewal,” social segregation, and the formation of slums, an oppositional development emerged in the 1960s that questioned architecture’s social responsibility and challenged the self-perception of those in the field.
