Rediscovery of natural and alternative materials

Over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth century, natural construction materials such as earth, straw, and wood see repeated (if temporary) resurgences. Architects and builders primarily turn to these “poor” materials in times of economic distress, such as in post-war periods. These materials become credible alternatives to their pernicious, industrial counterparts in the context of the peace, anti-nuclear, feminist, and environmental movements that arise in the 1960s and 70s.
