Die Ausstellung Contested Modernities. Postcolonial Architecture in Southeast Asia bringt den aktuellen Diskurs zur postkolonialen Moderne Südostasiens nach Berlin. Nach der Erlangung der Unabhängigkeit entstanden lokale Modernen, die lange das Bild der Städte prägten. Rasante Urbanisierungsprozesse führen heute dazu, dass die baulichen Zeugnisse dieses Aufbruchs zerstört werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Bedeutung dieser Architektur in der Region zunehmend thematisiert. Damit einher geht die Kritik an der verbreiteten Deutung der Moderne als originär westliche Bewegung.

Contested Modernities  ist Teil des langfristig angelegten Programms Encounters with Southeast Asian Modernism, das 2019 mit Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen in Phnom Penh, Jakarta, Yangon und Singapur begann. Die Ausstellung führt diese Beiträge in Berlin zusammen. Dokumentarische Projekte, Interviews und künstlerisch-forschende Arbeiten vermitteln einen beispielhaften Einblick in die Auseinandersetzungen, die in den jeweiligen Städten geführt werden. Der Ausstellungsteil Poelzigs Enkel und die Platte in den Tropen: Deutsche Einflüsse und Projekte in Südostasien  versucht zum ersten Mal eine Bestandsaufnahme planerischer und baulicher Aktivitäten mit Beteiligung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der DDR in einigen Ländern Südostasiens von den 1950er bis 1970er Jahren.

Christian Hiller und Eduard Kögel. Im April 2021 erschien das ARCH+ Heft Contested Modernities – Postkoloniale Architektur und Identitätskonstruktion in Südostasien. Anläßlich der Ausstellung ist zusätzlich zur deutschen auch eine englische Ausgabe der ARCH+ 243, Contested Modernities erschienen (LINK).

Exhibition from September 11 until October 24, 2021 at Haus der Statistik, Berlin

Contested Modernities. Postcolonial Architecture in Southeast Asia at Haus der Statistik (House of Statistics) brings current positions on Southeast Asian modernism to Berlin. Postcolonial architectural modernism in Southeast Asia is increasingly becoming a topic of discussion in light of rapid urbanization and ongoing processes of decolonization in the region. In Europe, this period of architectural modernism is largely unknown. In the region itself, however, an intensive discourse has been unfolding in recent years that involves revising what, until now, has been a strongly western-centric notion of modernism.

Contested Modernities is part of the long-term programme Encounters with Southeast Asian Modernism and is based on a multi-year exchange between the Berlin curatorial team and scholars, architects, artists, and curators from the region. In 2019, intensive explorations of postcolonial architecture in each city were made possible by research, exhibitions, and events taking place in Phnom Penh, Jakarta, Yangon, and Singapore. The exhibition in Berlin will present these contributions that examine narratives of postcolonial modernism and approaches to its built heritage in works spanning architecture, art, and academic research. By interweaving postcolonial architecture, contemporary perspectives, and highly topical urban issues, the exhibition will advance the discourse on alternative uses for modernist structures and concepts able to withstand the challenges in urban development today. The exhibition section of Poelzig’s Legacy and the Highrise in the Tropics: German Influences and Projects in Southeast Asia examines bilateral relations between Southeast Asia and the East and West Germany from the 1950s to the 1970s. This project reveals the different connections and transfers to the region from the formerly separate German countries.

Contested Modernities is an initiative by the curators Sally Below, Moritz Henning, Christian Hiller, and Eduard Kögel. An issue of ARCH+ on Southeast Asian modernism was published in April 2021. An English edition will be published in September 2021.
