ARCH+ features 116: This is Fine! – The Institutional Cycle of Architecture

Presentation and talk with Will Orr and Ricardo Ruivo (streetsweepers podcast)
Introduction: Jakob Walter on ARCH+ 251: The Business of Architecture
Moderation: Protocol

Thursday, 11 May 2023, 7pm
Universität der Künste Berlin, R310, Hardenbergstraße 33, 10623 Berlin

This lecture is the first in a new series of Protocol Talks, which will be held in the context of the new issue of the UdK´s magazine on architecture. It will deal with the question of which financial, political, and bureaucratic infrastructures are bound to architectural practice and how we can form alternative alliances to deal with these structures.

Will Orr and Ricardo Ruivo published their essay The Pyramid and the Labyrinth in ARCH+ 251: The Business of Architecture, discussing the dysfunctional relationship between architectural practice and academia precisely due to their different economic realities. For this event at the UdK, they will further elaborate on this torn relationship while exploring the class divide within architecture.

Ricardo and Will are both architectural theorists that host the podcast streetsweepers. Both completed their PhD at the Architectural Association School in London, where Ricardo Ruivo taught History and Theory and Will Orr currently teaches History and Critical Thinking.

After the lecture, Jakob Walter, one of the initiators and editors of ARCH+ 251, who is currently teaching at the ETH Chair Architecture of Territory, will join us for a discussion.
