The Love Tactic | Die Gefühletaktik: 72 Hour Urban Action

72 Hour Urban Action is the world’s first real-time architecture festival. It is also a political experiment, a kind of bureaucratic hack aiming to transform the city through grassroots and hands-on urbanism. Founded in 2010 at the Bat Yam Biennale of Landscape Urbanism, 72HUA editions have taken place in Bat Yam, Stuttgart, Terni, Roskilde, Witten, Istanbul, Birżebbuġa, and Jena. This bilingual ARCH+ special edition reflects on past 72HUA projects and explores its central themes. The German-language half also includes a detailed examination of the festival’s most recent iteration in Jena. Meanwhile, the English part of the book expands the discourse on critical spatial practice with thematic contributions by Liza Fior, Fabienne Hoelzel, Elke Krasny, Oli Mould, and Sumayya Vally. The past decade of 72HUA has been witness to citizen movements rising up around the world against cultures of subordination, division, and exploitation. Against this backdrop, this publication also serves as a handbook illuminating concepts and practices of playful, collaborative, and participatory design of public space.

It happened two years later; two years after 72 Hour Urban Action Lobeda, a temporary project that transformed an entire city district—Lobeda-West—and with it, a part of Jena. It was Friday the 13th, when the city enterprise JenaKultur, and with it the city’s cultural scene, went into emergency mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Play” is a word that we are all very familiar with, and will no doubt have a good idea about what it entails. But drill a bit deeper into how it is used and applied, particularly within an urban context, and you’ll find a more complicated picture. Because over the last few decades, cities all over the world have begun to embed terms such as “fun” and “play” into more and more institutional and developmental vernaculars—from the traditional forms associated with children’s playgrounds and leisure spaces, to branding multi-million-dollar luxury gated condominiums as spaces of play.

Reading our cities’ and landscapes’ histories and archaeologies and a sense of interconnectedness is necessary through many different scales and the different lenses and languages these require. The Powerful, the Informal, and the Political — Failures of Community-Based (Urban) Design in Lagos

There are many Makokos in Lagos. The centrally located waterfront community of Makoko is probably the most well known of the many “slums”1 or informal settlements in Lagos, the most populous city in Nigeria and, along with Cairo and Kinshasa, on the African continent. One of the reasons for the widespread existence of informal settlements like Makoko may be rooted in the move of Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja in 1990.

Die Gefühletaktik – Ein urbaner Ausdruck von Zuneigung

Eine gute Geschichte geht unter die Haut. Sie löst buchstäblich physische Reaktionen aus. Dann sendet der Bauch eine Nachricht an das Gehirn, damit es aufmerksam der Moral von der Geschichte lauscht, aus ihr lernt und über die breitere Botschaft nachdenkt.
