Pumping the Ruhr

Since the advent of industrial mining, the history of the Ruhr region has been inseparable from water management. Groundwater, mine water, land subsidence, contaminated aquifers, and flooding: Water was never merely a byproduct, but a central operational challenge of extraction. As mining extended to ever greater depths, increasingly complex technical infrastructure—most notably large-scale pumping systems—was developed over decades. Without these systems, mining on the scale that continues to shape the region today would not have been possible.
