Unformal(ized) Architectures, “Informal” Modernisms

State demolition of buildings rendered “illegal” or “informal” is a recurring theme across much of Africa.^1,2 In Ethiopia, for instance, around 12,000 homes were demolished in early 2019 in the Legetafo and Legedadi neighborhoods on the outskirts of the capital, Addis Ababa. These homes had been built by citizens in response to the inability of the government to provide adequate housing amid rapidly growing urban migration.
