How can experimental material research and architectural practice converge to address the ecological and social legacies of rapid industrialization, colonial-era infrastructures, war-related contamination, and accelerating climate change in Vietnam?
The evening brings together Hà Nguyen, Nhut Nguyen (arb architects, Hanoi), and Hojung Kim (Assistant Professor, USA) for a conversation linking built work in Vietnam with ongoing material research between Vietnam and Berlin. Drawing on vernacular knowledge and site-sourced soils, they explore how experimental techniques can respond to contemporary ecological and social challenges—and how these methods might be translated into architectural practice and scalable construction.
Hà Nguyen, founder of arb architects, pursues serenity in architecture by weaving ritual, tradition, and craft into contemporary practice. She will present the Chum Distillery and the Đạo Mẫu Museum & Temple, where the reuse of red clay roof tiles reinterprets local building culture while supporting threatened spiritual and cultural practices.
As Experimental Fellows at Bauhaus Earth, Hà, Nhut, and Kim will introduce Situated Regionalism, their ongoing research on unfired brick construction across Vietnam’s seven ecological zones, and discuss their work at the Material Matters (MM) Research Lab, where experimental findings are translated into culturally grounded and industrially scalable earthen building systems.
Die Veranstaltung wird von der Architektenkammer Berlin anerkannt und mit 2 Unterrichtseinheiten (1UE = 45 Minuten) bewertet. // The “ARCH+ Salon” is recognized by the Berlin Chamber of Architects and is worth 2 teaching units (1 TU = 45 minutes)
About Experimental
Experimental is a Berlin-based non-profit organization founded in 2022 by architect Prof. Regine Leibinger. Its core initiative is the Experimental Fellowship Program, that supports practice-based, research-driven architectural projects in diverse regions. The Fellowship promotes regenerative material practices and advances sustainable, circular, and climate-conscious architectural knowledge. The first Experimental Fellowship was launched in 2022 in collaboration with Bauhaus Earth.
The event is initiated by the Experimental Fellowship at Bauhaus Earth, with the kind support of the Experimental Foundation.
