Viennese Conditions – Tools for a Mixed City
Architects Lina Streeruwitz and Bernd Vlay of StudioVlayStreeruwitz and the architecture and urbanism scholar Robert Temel in conversation with Christina Lenart
With Freie Mitte—Vielseitiger Rand (Open Center—Multifaceted Edge), StudioVlayStreeruwitz won the urban planning competition for the new Nordbahnhof neighborhood in 2012. Their concept built on an existing master plan from 1994, which was to be updated after half of it had already been implemented. For the Leben am Helmut-Zilk-Park neighborhood in the new Sonnwendviertel area, Robert Temel organized the concept-based competition for building groups (≥ Glossary) and so-called Quartiershäuser (neighborhood buildings ≥ Glossary) on behalf of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). In this email exchange with Christina Lenart, they discuss their experiences with different planning processes, how to enable a diversity in uses, and new tools to ensure quality.
