The social critique in British artist Tom Hunter’s (b. 1965) photography is often based on visual motifs by old masters, such as this photo which quotes Jan Vermeer’s painting, Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (ca. 1658). Hunter’s photo depicts a young woman, a baby beside her, standing at the window reading a letter; as the title reveals, it is an eviction notice. Although care work in the domestic context is classically assigned to a woman, here it is charged with critical content. The photo series specifically references the housing situation in the London district of Hackney in the late 1990s. At that time, squatters received a letter from the city council addressed to “Persons Unknown,” announcing the eviction and demolition of the buildings and the construction of new warehouses in their place. Tom Hunter’s series generated so much media attention at the time that evictions were averted and the neighborhood preserved. / © Tom Hunter
