Der profitgetriebene Kapitalismus hat zu immer schnelleren Zyklen der Verwertung und Vernutzung geführt. Angesichts von Klimakrise und Ressourcenschwund ist dieses auf Verbrauch und Zerstörung von Bestehendem basierende System längst nicht mehr tragfähig. In der Architektur ist es unter dem Primat des Marktes dennoch weiterhin gängige Praxis, Gebäude massenhaft abzureißen und durch Neubauten zu ersetzen. Zugleich besitzt die Disziplin jedoch auch ein spezifisches Reparaturwissen; Strategien der Reparatur sind seit jeher Kernbestandteil des Repertoires der Architektur. Das Arbeiten mit dem Bestand – die Instandsetzung, das Um- und Weiterbauen – kann in dieser Perspektive als Gegenstrategie zur Obsoleszenz begriffen werden, um dazu beizutragen, den unablässigen Kreislauf aus Destruktion und Neuproduktion zu verlangsamen. Das Gebot unserer Zeit ist die Pflege und der behutsame Umgang mit dem, was bereits vorhanden ist.
Profit-driven capitalism has led to ever swifter cycles of consumption and wastage. In light of the climate crisis and fastdwindling resources, this system, with its insistence on exhaustion and destruction of the existing, has long ceased to be viable. In architecture it is nevertheless still a customary practice under the primacy of the market to simply demolish buildings en masse and build new ones. At the same time, however, the discipline also possesses a specific knowledge of repairing; strategies of repair have always been a core element of architecture’s repertoire. In this view, working with existing buildings, overhauling them, converting them, and extending them can be seen as a strategy to counter obsolescence and to contribute to slowing down the incessant cycle of destruction and new production.
