Following its market launch in the beginning of the 1920s, the vacuum cleaner was touted as an essential household appliance designed to offer housewives a convenient and efficient solution for their cleaning needs. However, the mechanization of domestic work in the form of mass-produced household appliances not only brought relief, but also solidified the role of the housewife and promoted her isolation in suburban settlements. Socializing domestic work is therefore a central feminist demand.
