Diversifying Construction

In Ines Doujak’s collages, flora and fauna enter into an ornamental union with human bodies marked by disease. The assembled images are mostly taken from medical textbooks from the turn of the 20th century, when the connection between bacteria, viruses, and diseases was scientifically proven and the hygienediscourse began its triumphant advance. The human body’s depicted vulnerability makes it obvious that humans are inextricably connected to non-human creatures and to the environment. However, the conditions for deadly pandemics are often produced by humans themselves. The progressive destruction of natural habitats and biodiversity is a central cause of the spread of new diseases transmitted from animals to humans.
